In the Winter session of Parliament on December 19, a total of 141 Opposition members of the Lok Sabha, including notable figures like Supriya Sule, Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari, and Farooq Abdullah, were named and suspended, with the dissent originating from a security breach the previous week.
Dr. Farooq Abdullah, speaking in the Lok Sabha for the first time since the revocation of Article 370, highlighted the opposition’s accusation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government was undermining democracy, leading to the unprecedented suspension of 78 MPs in a single day.
The majority of the suspensions will endure throughout the remaining winter session, concluding on Friday. The INDIA alliance, a coalition opposing Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), witnessed the suspension of 95 out of its 142 Lok Sabha members and 46 out of its 101 Rajya Sabha members.
The BJP, on the other hand, contends that opposition leaders deliberately disrupted parliamentary proceedings.
