The Government has rejected the applications of 6000 entities for Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act or FCRA registration which includes Jamia Millia Islamia and Oxfam India. The institutions and organisations will no more be entitled to receive foreign funding.
“These entities either did not apply for renewal of their FCRA licence or the Union home ministry rejected their applications,” officials were quoted as saying by Press Trust of India.
Organisations and entities whose registration under the FCRA ceased or validity expired include the Indira Gandhi National Centre For Arts (IGNCA), Indian Institute Of Public Administration (IIPA), Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Foundation, Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), Delhi College of Engineering and Oxfam India, according to the official website related to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.
The FCRA registration is mandatory for any association and NGO to receive foreign funding.
Activists have criticised the Indian government for the same as they believe it is a tactic to suppress free voices in support of human rights and rights of minorities.
