The flood situation in Assam continues to be grim as the death toll has reached 32 and at least 63,000 people have been affected across five districts of Assam with the MeT department having predicted more rain in the coming days.
Lakhimpur District is the worst-hit with nearly 32,000 being affected, followed by Charaideo with around 29,000 flood-hit people, local reports revealed.
The Indian home minister Rajnath Singh has assured the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of full assistance from the Centre to tide over the situation.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has in its latest report said that 63,300 people are at present affected by the floods in five Assam districts of Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo and Karimganj.
The North Eastern states of India as a whole have received less attention from the mainstream Indian Media. A Student from Assam told, “We are not given any space in these dailies” to editor of an Assam based News portal feels that less of the readers of National Media are in Assam. “So Obviously they tend to lessen their coverage to issues in the North East.”
