Former governor Satyapal Malik passes away at 79

Satyapal Malik, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on Monday at the age of 79 after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for kidney-related complications, confirmed his personal secretary, KS Rana.

Malik had been hospitalized for several weeks and had earlier shared updates about his deteriorating health. On June 8, he described his condition as “serious” in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), noting he had been under medical care for nearly a month.

A veteran politician, Satyapal Malik served in various administrative roles over the decades, most notably as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019, a period marked by the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories.

His tenure in J&K remains one of the most discussed phases in recent Indian political history, as he presided over the region during the Centre’s decision to revoke its special constitutional status on August 5, 2019.

His death coincides with the sixth anniversary of the unliteral abrogation of articles 35A and 370, which provided constitutional safeguards to Jammu Kashmir.

Further details about funeral arrangements are expected to be announced shortly.
