Former MLA seeks ex-gratia for kin of alleged custodial death victims in Poonch

Former Member Legislative Assembly (MLA) and Advocate Qamar Choudhary has demanded ex-gratia for the family members of the three civilians who were allegedly killed in the custody of government forces in the Poonch district of Jammu Kashmir.

The former MLA said that the matter should be investigated thoroughly and the culprits behind the heinous crimes must be brought to the book. “The LG should personally visit the spot and pay ex gratia to the kin of the slain,” he said.

He said that the three have been brutally tortured in the custody of the government forces that have led to their death. “It is unfortunate that three people have been picked up for questioning and then their dead bodies return home,” the former MLA said.

As per news reports, two vehicles of the Indian army were ambushed by militants near the Dera Ki Gali in Surankote between the twin districts Poonch and Rajouri of the Pir Panjal range. Five army personnel were killed and two other critically wounded.

Following this, reports added, that at least ten locals were arrested for questioning, which included three individuals identified as Safeer Hussain son of Wazir Hussain aged 37 and Mohammed Showkat son of Nazir Hussain aged 26 and Shabir Ahmed aged 32, residents of Topi Pir area in Bufliaz area of Poonch.

While the three of those detained were brought dead to the hospital, many others are said to be injured.

Qamar Choudhary also condemned the killings of the army personnel and said that it was unfortunate that the government force personnel were being killed at will by the militants. “They do claim that the situation has improved in Jammu Kashmir, however, it is now visible to everyone how much the situation has improved,” he said.

He also claimed that people were not being allowed to visit the village.
