Former professor Dr Abdul Bari Naik booked under Public Safety: Family

Dr Abdul Bari Naik, a former assistant professor and a well-known activist from south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, has been booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA), his family said.

Family members of Dr. Abdul Bari confirmed to The Kashmiriyat, that the former profesor was arrested Monday and subsequently booked under the Public Safety Act.

“He was summoned to a Police station in Srinagar on Monday. He cooperated and went to the Police station. We were later informed that he was been booked under Public Safety Act,” his brother told The Kashmiriyat over the phone.

Dr Naik, who previously taught Geography at Government Degree College Udhampur, was earlier arrested by the Cyber Police in connection with what authorities described as “obscene online content.”

He was released on bail shortly after his initial arrest.

This is not the first time Dr Naik has faced legal action. In 2021, he was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for alleged incitement on a college campus, charges he has consistently denied.

In late April 2021, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha’s administration invoked Article 311(2)(C) of the Constitution, permitting dismissal without inquiry “in the interest of state security”, to terminate Dr. Naik along with two other government employees

More details are expected once the PSA dossier is made public or challenged legally by Dr Naik’s family or legal representatives.

“We have not been provided any dossier as of yet, but we expect that we will be provided a dossier tomorrow,” his brother told The Kashmiriyat.
