Fruit growers Union calls new Vande Bharat rail link a game-changer for Kashmir’s economy

The inauguration of the Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat rail link has been hailed as a game-changer for Jammu Kashmir’s economy, with the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union calling it a “historic and long-awaited milestone” poised to transform regional trade, travel, and connectivity.

Representing fruit growers and dealers from key horticultural centers across the Valley—including Srinagar, Sopore, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Shopian, and Pulwama—the Union described the new rail link as a “bridge of opportunity.” It will significantly reduce travel times, ensure all-weather connectivity, and provide a safer, more affordable mode of transport for local commuters, tourists, and traders alike.

“The new railway segment is more than just infrastructure—it’s a vital artery of commerce and mobility,” said Bashir Ahmad Basheer, Chairman of the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union and President of The New Kashmir Fruit Association. “This link opens the door for Kashmir to truly realize its potential as a horticulture powerhouse. It will serve as the lifeline of our economy, especially during off-season months when fast, reliable access to markets is critical for our produce.”

Flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat Express connects the Kashmir Valley with India’s broader railway network through the iconic Chenab Bridge—the world’s highest railway arch bridge. The new service is scheduled to begin operations on June 7.

The Fruit Growers Union expressed optimism that the rail link would boost tourism and trade by improving accessibility and easing road congestion, particularly on the frequently disrupted Jammu-Srinagar highway.

Looking ahead, the Union urged the government to introduce direct rail connectivity between Delhi and Srinagar, alongside a dedicated goods train service to the Valley. “This would revolutionize horticulture trade by cutting transport costs, reducing damage to perishable produce, and enhancing logistics,” the Union said. “It would also create new economic opportunities for Indian Railways, while boosting employment and trade volumes across Jammu and Kashmir.”

Calling the rail link a symbol of hope and progress, the Union congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, declaring the moment a turning point for economic empowerment throughout the Union Territory.

“The vision of connecting Kashmir by rail is no longer a dream—it’s a moving train of prosperity,” Basheer said.
