The Kashmiri community in South Africa held funeral prayers in absentia in the wake of Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s death at Johannesburg.
Kashmiris gathered in Johannesburg on Thursday night and also held special prayers for the deceased Hurriyat leader.
The widely popular veteran separatist leader from Kashmir Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away Wednesday night at around 10:30 p.m., after which the news spread widely across the valley.
As minor incidents of protests were reported from the valley, immediately a curfew was imposed. All sorts of communication services have been barred since then.
Meanwhile, Geelani’s family alleged that the security personnel snatched his body and didn’t let them perform his last rites, a claim refuted by the Jammu Kasmir Police.
Geelani was also buried at a graveyard near his house, although he had willed to be buried at Srinagar’s Idgah Mazaar-e-Shohada (martyrs’ cemetery).
