Google Doodle on Sunday honoured Fatima Sheikh, renowned social reformer and educationist on her 191st birth anniversary.
Fatima worked for girls’ education along with Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule in the 19th century. She co-founded the Indigenous Library, one of India’s first schools for girls in 1848.

“It takes a woman and her unflinching will Flexed biceps to bring about reform in the face of resistance,” Google said in a tweet.
Fatima Sheikh opened her house to the Phules after the couple was evicted for attempting to educate people belonging to lower castes. The Indigenous Library was opened in her house.

She went door-to-door to invite the underprivileged sections in her community to learn at the Indigenous Library despite facing strong opposition from the dominant classes who attempted to humiliate those involved in the movement for girls’ education, but Sheikh and her allies continued their struggle.
