
An Air India flight (AI171) en route to London Gatwick crashed during take-off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday evening, sparking a major emergency response. The Kashmiriyat has exclusively accessed the complete list of passengers and crew members who were aboard the ill-fated flight.
According to official information, a total of 242 individuals were on board: 2 pilots, 10 cabin crew members, and 230 passengers. The flight was commanded by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, with First Officer Clive Kundar as co-pilot.
The Air India flight that crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on Thursday was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which had departed from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 13:38 hrs. The aircraft was carrying a total of 242 individuals, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members.
Of the 230 passengers on board, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were British nationals, 1 Canadian national, and 7 Portuguese nationals, according to initial documentation reviewed by The Kashmiriyat.
In response to the tragic incident, Air India has activated a dedicated passenger information hotline: 1800 5691 444, to assist families and provide updates.
Additionally, the Gujarat state government has established a control room at the State Emergency Operation Center to coordinate rescue and communication efforts. Concerned individuals can reach the control room via phone at 079-232-51900 or mobile at 99784 05304.
The aircraft suffered a catastrophic failure during departure, resulting in a loud explosion, thick smoke, and chaos on the runway. Eyewitnesses from Meghaninagar reported hearing three loud blasts followed by heavy smoke rising from the airport area.
Emergency response teams were rushed to the spot. More than five fire tenders were deployed by the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services. Paramilitary forces, the NDRF, and NSG units also reached the scene and began relief operations. A large part of the airport premises was sealed off, and roads leading to it have been closed to facilitate rescue efforts.
Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the Civil Hospital, where the injured are being treated. The CM, who was in Surat at the time of the crash, was briefed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who called him to review the situation.
There are unconfirmed reports that former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani may have been aboard the flight. Sources indicate that he was scheduled to travel to London, but official confirmation is still awaited regarding his presence and condition.
Air India released a short statement saying: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad–London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details.”
A full-scale investigation is underway. A technical team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has arrived at the site, and Air India has initiated an internal inquiry. Authorities say the cause of the crash is yet to be determined.
The Kashmiriyat has accessed the full list of passengers and crew members and will release verified names following confirmation with authorities and families. As of now, at least 20 fatalities are feared, with several others critically injured.
