Gujjar Bakerwal community calls off agitation after Amit Shah’s assurance

The Gujjar and Bakerwal community has called off their strike that started on November 04 to protest the Central government’s move to include Pahari community in the Schedule Tribe (ST) list. Speaking to The Kashmiriyat a community activist confirmed that the street protests that started in 12 districts of Jammu Kashmir have been called off after a delegation of the community met the Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi

“The delegation that met Amit Shah in Delhi have been promised that the new addition of Paharis to the ST list will not impact the current quota of STs,” Irshad Chowdhary, a community activist told The Kashmiriyat.

He said that the community representatives who met Amit Shah has been assured that their standing quote in jobs, education and other benefits will not be impacted by the latest order, which Amit Shah announced during his recent rally in Jammu Kashmir.

The Gujjar and Bakerwals had opposed the inclusion of Paharis in the ST list.
