A gynaecologist posted at Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Banihal was arrested on Tuesday after a female patient accused him of sexual assault inside his chamber.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that the doctor was drunk at the time, a charge that is currently under investigation.

Police said the doctor was taken into custody after completion of necessary medical formalities. A case has been registered, and further investigations are underway.

Banihal MLA Sajjad Shaheen confirmed the arrest and said he immediately took up the matter with Health Minister Sakina Itoo. “I urged the Hon’ble Minister to ensure strict action. She has assured that such shameful acts will never be tolerated and exemplary measures will be taken,” Shaheen stated.

DDC Councilor Banihal and senior Congress leader Imtiaz Ahmed Khanday also met Health Secretary Syed Abid Rashid Shah in Srinagar, demanding suspension of the accused. Khanday said the secretary assured immediate action.

Later in the evening, the government issued an order suspending the doctor, identified as Dr. Girdhari Lal Manhas, Consultant Gynaecologist at SDH Banihal.

“Pending inquiry into his conduct, Dr. Manhas is hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect. During the suspension period, he shall remain attached with the Directorate of Health Services, Jammu,” reads Government Order No. 651-JK(HME) of 2025, signed by Health Secretary Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah.

The investigation into the allegations, including the claim of intoxication, is in progress.
