Hours after tying rakhi, cousin raped and killed by UP man

A 33-year-old man was arrested for the suspected sexual assault and homicide of his 14-year-old cousin, shortly after she had tied a rakhi on him, in Auraiya.

The suspect, named Surjeet, visited his uncle’s residence on Rakshabandhan on Saturday morning, during which his cousin performed the rakhi ceremony on him.

Authorities mentioned that later that evening, after consuming a significant amount of alcohol, he sexually assaulted and killed her, attempting to make it appear as if she had taken her own life by hanging her body.

The girl’s father, who was asleep in another room, discovered his daughter’s lifeless body the following day and notified the authorities.

Upon discovering blood traces within the house, law enforcement determined that it was not a suicide. They interrogated relatives and observed Surjeet’s consistent presence. While being questioned, he often spoke on behalf of other relatives.

As the investigation continued the next day, Surjeet made efforts to deceive the authorities. His actions became suspicious as he prevented family members from answering questions. Subsequently, he was held in custody and admitted to the offense during questioning.

According to Auraiya SP Abhijeet Shankar, proof of sexual assault was established in the postmortem analysis.

Additionally, strands of hair were discovered beneath the teenager’s fingernails. Samples of the suspect’s hair were collected for comparison and forwarded to the forensic science laboratory in Jhansi. A DNA examination will also be conducted, the SP elaborated.
