Hundreds gather at Mazar-e-Shohda to remember Dr. Qazi Nisar

On Thursday, hundreds of people gathered at Mazar-e-Shohda in Anantnag to commemorate the death anniversary of Dr. Qazi Nisar Ahmad, the former Mirwaiz of south Kashmir and a towering religious and political figure.

People from across the region arrived early in the morning to offer prayers and pay their respects at his grave, marking 31 years since his assassination.

Dr. Qazi Nisar is widely remembered not just for his political resistance and religious leadership, but also for his formidable role in advancing education in South Kashmir.

He played a key part in introducing the Iqra Group of Schools to some of the remotest corners of the region—quietly working to ensure that children in faroff areas had access to quality education. Interestingly, the schools were not named after him or his family, a reflection of his focus on community welfare over personal legacy.

He authored three significant books, covering themes that ranged from Islamic jurisprudence to daily prayer practices, showcasing his deep scholarship and command over Islamic thought.

However, it is his oratory—his stirring, bold speeches—that continues to echo through the memories of those who followed him. His sermons, often delivered during turbulent times, are still quoted in mosques, gatherings, and homes, remembered for their clarity, conviction, and moral force.

Dr. Qazi Nisar was assassinated by unknown gunmen on June 19, 1994, near Dialgam in Anantnag. In the years that followed, many of his close associates and followers were also targeted and killed due to their association with him.
