‘I won’t condemn cartoons of Prophet Mohammad’- France’s President Macron

On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that it wasn’t his place as a president to pass judgement on the choice of a satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, to again publish cartoons of Prophet Mohammad.

“It’s never the place of a president of the Republic to pass judgment on the editorial choice of a journalist or newsroom, never. Because we have freedom of the press,” Macron said during his visit to Lebanon.

The French President also said it was imperative for French citizens to demonstrate civility and respect for one another, and keep away from a “dialogue of hate.”

Charlie Hebdo, re-published the cartoons of Prophet Mohammad on the eve of a court hearing in Paris of alleged accomplices in the 2015 attack on the magazine’s offices by militant gunmen which had led to the death of 12 people.

The cartoons published by Charlie Hebdo and other publications in 2015 had initially unleashed a wave of anger amongst Muslims around the world as for Muslims any depiction of the Prophet is blasphemous.

Moreover, before the attack on Charlie Hebdo’s offices in 2015, militants online had threatened the magazine about repercussions for publishing the cartoons.
