Kashmiri Muslims on Sunday took out processions in vvarious parts of the kashmir valley in the run up to the martyrdom anniversary of Imam e Hussain- the grandson of the last Prophet of Islam.
Various processions are taken out in the valley in the run up to the martyrdom of imam e Hussain who was martyred by the forces of yazid in Karabala (Iraq) on the 10th day of Muharram- the first Month of islamic calendar.
Eyewitnesses told The Kashmiriyat that hundreds of mourners took out processions were taken out in Zadibal, Hassanabad and other parts of Srinagar.
Reciting dirges and shouting pro Islamic Slogans, they marched through the lanes and streets to reiterate the message of Karbala.
Muslims believe that the battle of Karbala was not meant to grab a patch of land, rather it was intended to secure and uphold core human values. It was a battle between good and evil, right and wrong and justice and oppression.
The day is commorated globally by Muslims, some take out processions on the day, while as many others observe fast to pay tributes to mourn the end of the family of Ali- the fourth caliph of Islam.
Though major mourning processions have been banned by the Government of Jammu Kashmir on the 10th day of Muharram since the 1990s when there was a rise in insurgency in the state, Smaller processions are permitted in some Shia-pockets of the state, including in the districts of Kashmir.
In the state capital of Srinagar, processions were disallowed along thetraditional route–that begins at Abi Guzar, passes through Maisuma, and ends at Zadibal–and the occasion is often marred by clashes between the mourners and the police.
