IPL 2025 suspended indefinitely as India-Pakistan tensions escalate

The Indian Premier League 2025 has been indefinitely suspended following a sharp escalation in military tensions between India and Pakistan, PTI has reported.

The decision came after the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala was abruptly halted due to security concerns stemming from air raid alerts near the venue.

The HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, located less than 100 km from Pathankot—where air raid sirens were sounded—became the epicenter of heightened anxiety. Initially delayed by rain, the match was called off when floodlights failed and security officials raised an alert. Players, including foreign cricketers, expressed panic, with Australian media reporting that their players were preparing to return home due to safety fears.

Spectators, who filled around 80% of the stands, were evacuated amid rising tensions. Anti-Pakistan slogans were heard as fans exited the stadium.

In response, the BCCI and IPL governing council convened an emergency review of the unfolding situation. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal told PTI that the league’s future hinged on government advisories, which were still awaited as of Thursday night.

Flights to and from Dharamsala were suspended, and team movements were redirected for security. Although the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match was cancelled, the Lucknow Super Giants vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru game was still tentatively scheduled for Friday night in Lucknow.

This comes against the backdrop of a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, prompting India to launch missile strikes on multiple terror camps in Pakistan. In retaliation, Pakistan launched attacks on Indian cities near the border, further escalating the standoff.

In a separate development, Rohit Sharma issued a statement urging the public to support the Indian armed forces and refrain from spreading misinformation. “Our warriors are standing tall. It’s important for every Indian to be responsible,” he posted on X.

As military operations intensify and public safety becomes paramount, the IPL’s continuation remains uncertain, with further announcements expected soon.
