Islamic Cleric Arrested for Leading the Funeral Prayers of his Militant Cousin

An Islamic cleric has been arrested from his home in Shalipora area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam District on last friday.

Identified as Hafiz Tahir Ahmed resident of Shalipora Kulgam was arrested after leading the funeral prayers of his Militant cousin, Mudasir Ahmed on 22 July 2018.

His father, Mohammed Ayoub Dar speaking to The Kashmiriyat said that Tahir was arrested during a raid by Government Forces on last Friday and they charged him with leading the funeral of his cousin.

The father alleged that Police has been unnecessarily delaying his release.

Tahir is a teacher of the Islamic seminary named Jamia Farooqi in Hermain area of South Kashmir’s Shopian District.

The Students of the seminary on Friday staged a protest at Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kulgam demanding the release of their teacher.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat one of the student, Adil Hameed Haji, said that, “Our teacher should be released immediately as Our education is suffering.”

Waseem Ahmed Shah another student from the seminary said, “It is shameful that our teacher has been arrested for performing his religious obligations. This proves that Islam is severely under threat in Kashmir.

The students demanded the immediate release of their teachers.

Police officials told The Kashmiriyat that Tahir has been detained for questioning.

Pertinently Mudasir along with two associates was killed in a gunfight in Khudwani area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam District  on Sunday.
