Israel Strikes Southern Damascus, Syria Says

On Monday, Syrian air defenses blocked an Israeli “aggression” above Damascus, reported Syrian state media.

Western intelligence sources have claimed the recent wave of attacks on Syria were Israeli strikes targetting a major Iranian-backed ammunition depot on the edge of the capital in Jabal al Mane near the town of Kiswa.

Syrian state television reported that Israeli missiles had flown over the Syrian Golan Heights where they made raids around the capital Damascus.

The state television quoted a Syrian military spokesman saying Syria’s air defenses countered most of the missile strikes that were aimed at southern Damascus suburbs, areas that Israel has been reported to hit in the past.

The Syrian military spokesman said the missiles were thwarted before reaching their targets and caused only “material losses.”

Other missiles targeted Lebanese pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia towns of Muqaylabiya and Zakiya near Kiswa, according to two senior army defectors.

According to an official in the regional alliance that backs Iran, there were no Iranian or Hezbollah casualties due to the strikes.

Israel has accepted conducting many raids inside Syria since the beginning of the 2011 Syrian civil war as it sees Iran’s presence in the conflict-ridden country as a strategic threat.

In recent months, Israel’s defense officials have stated that Israel would increase its campaign against Iran in Syria.

According to intelligence sources and military defectors familiar with the locations, the Syrian areas hit by Israel in recent months are supposed to have a strong presence of Iranian-backed militias.

There has been no immediate Israeli comment about the recent strikes.
