Jammu Kashmir assembly: National Conference likely to bring in resolution on Article 370

As Jammu Kashmir’s legislative assembly enters its third day on Wednesday, a contentious debate is anticipated.

The National Conference (NC) is likely to seek the restoration of Article 370 and assembly powers, while the BJP has said that it would oppose any bill regarding 370.

Tanvir Sadiq, the chief spokesperson of the Jammu Kashmir National Conference, has indicated that the party plans to introduce a resolution regarding Article 370 in a “well-mannered way.”

He criticized PDP MLA Waheed ur Rehman Para’s recent actions as “out of the rule and merely a gimmick for the cameras.” Sadiq stated, “The party is committed to bring a resolution and discuss it in the house on Wednesday.”

Senior National Conference leader and MLA Aijaz Ahmed Jan also expressed that his party’s is committed to keep the issue of 370 alive. He said “Article 370, and Article 35A and statehood are the top priorities of our government. It is my responsibility within this assembly to honour the mandate given by the people and to fulfil their wishes.”

Aijaz further pledged, “Whenever and wherever necessary, whether through a bill or a resolution, we will fight for the rights of the people of Jammu Kashmir.”

On the other hand, BJP representatives are firm in their stance against revisiting Article 370, which was abrogated in 2019.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) J-K president, Sat Sharma, asserted on Monday that the BJP will firmly oppose any attempts to restore Article 370 in the Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

His comments came in response to a resolution by PDP MLA Waheed Para, who proposed restoring the abrogated Article.

Sharma noted that all 28 BJP legislators unanimously rejected Para’s resolution, underscoring the party’s stance against any reversal of Article 370’s abrogation.

He further stated that certain factions are opposed to peace in Jammu Kashmir, and assured that the BJP would counter any such disruptive efforts.
