The Kashmir valley has experienced significant deviations in weather patterns, with a substantial rainfall deficit during the week of 12th July to 18th July 2024.
As per Indian Metrological Department, during this period, the Kashmir region experienced an even more severe shortage, receiving 85.85% below-normal rainfall.
The district-wise analysis, as accessed by The Kashmiriyat, for the Kashmir region revealed that Anantnag had an 81% below-normal rainfall for the week and 57% below normal for the season. Similarly, Budgam experienced a 93% weekly deficit and a 61% seasonal deficit, Bandipora had a 92% weekly deficit, and Baramulla reported a 56% weekly deficit. Ganderbal faced a 41% deficit, Kulgam had a 74% seasonal deficit, Kupwara saw a 99% weekly and 53% seasonal deficit, Pulwama had a 93% rainfall deficit, Shopian reported a 66% deficit, and Srinagar experienced a 99% weekly deficit. On average, the seasonal rainfall shortage for the Kashmir region was 53.59%.
The temperature patterns have also shown notable anomalies. In the Kashmir division, the highest maximum temperature reached 34.2°C, while the lowest minimum temperature dropped to 9.5°C.
The weekly average maximum temperature was recorded at 31.6°C, which is 1.5°C above normal.
The weekly average minimum temperature was 18.1°C, with an anomaly of -0.6°C.
The significant shortfall in rainfall and the deviations in temperature have raised concerns about the potential impact on agriculture, water resources, and overall environmental stability in the region. Farmers and local authorities are urged to take necessary precautions and measures to mitigate the adverse effects of this abnormal weather pattern.
