During the annual Kheer Bhawani Mela at Tulmulla in Ganderbal district, a significant cultural and spiritual event for the Kashmiri Pandit community, former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti visited the revered Mata Kheer Bhawani temple to extend greetings to the devotees. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, she underscored the irreplaceable role of Kashmiri Pandits in the region’s social and cultural fabric.
“Jammu Kashmir is incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits,” she said, emphasizing that their dignified return is essential for any meaningful and lasting resolution to the region’s long-standing issues. She added, “The issues pertaining to J\&K cannot be resolved through military solutions or the guns of militants. What we need is a political solution, and that cannot happen until Kashmiri Pandits return with dignity and play a role in shaping the future.”
The annual pilgrimage, held on the auspicious occasion of Zyestha Ashtami, draws thousands of Kashmiri Pandits from across India who come to offer prayers at the shrine dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi. The festival has long symbolized resilience, spiritual connection, and a longing for return among the displaced community.
Earlier today, National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah also visited the temple. He offered prayers and conveyed his greetings to the Pandit community. Speaking to the media, Abdullah expressed hope for the safe and dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits to their homeland, stating that their presence is vital to the cultural integrity of the Valley.
The visits by top political leaders during the Yatra not only reflect solidarity with the displaced community but also underscore a growing call for reconciliation and inclusivity in the region, particularly amid ongoing debates around return, rehabilitation, and justice for Kashmiri Pandits.
