Kashmir plains likely to receive snowfall by January 31

A fresh Western Disturbance is poised to impact Jammu Kashmir from today until February 1st, ushering in rain and snow activities that will commence in the higher reaches and gradually extend to parts of the Jammu region, including Udhampur, Kishtwar, and Doda districts by evening.

By tomorrow morning, widespread rain and snow are expected throughout Jammu Kashmir, with central and south Kashmir experiencing relatively less activity during the daytime.

As temperatures plummet on the evening of January 31st, the likelihood of snowfall in plains increases significantly.

Between January 31st evening and February 1st, moderate to heavy rain and snowfall are forecasted for the Jammu region, including its higher reaches, Ramban, Kishtwar, Doda, and the higher reaches of Kathua.

The Sinthan Pass might witness a substantial snow accumulation of 2 to 5 feet.

Moreover, lightning and thunderstorms are anticipated in parts of the Jammu region during this period, prompting a special cautionary note to residents to stay alert.

Snowfall probabilities are also outlined, with varying chances across regions.

In terms of snowfall probabilities, Jammu region, South Kashmir Plains, and Central Kashmir all have distinct likelihoods, with different chances allocated for varying snowfall amounts.

Tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, and Doodhpathri are expected to receive good amounts of snowfall, while central Kashmir might experience less impact from this weather system.

The weather is anticipated to turn dry from the morning of February 2nd. Looking ahead, from February 3rd to 4th, another Western Disturbance, light to moderate in intensity, is expected to affect the region, bringing colder temperatures and light to moderate snowfall in the plains of Kashmir.

Advisory notes include potential disruptions in the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway due to landslides and shooting stones.

Travel plans for February 1st are advised to be reconsidered, especially for Sinthan Pass, which may remain closed for an extended period. Tourists are encouraged to opt for Sonamarg, Pahalgam, or Gulmarg for a snow-filled experience.
