Award-winning author Mirza Waheed is set to release his fourth novel, Maryam & Son, in 2025, as announced by Westland Books on Monday.
The novel, to be published under Westland’s ‘Context’ imprint, follows the emotional journey of a mother whose life is upended when her son goes missing and is suspected of involvement in a distant conflict in Iraq.
Speaking about his new work, Waheed said, “Maryam has kept me company for the last five years. I have enjoyed writing her and thinking about her family. I hope readers will connect with them as much as I do.”

The publisher described Maryam & Son as a gripping narrative that captures the pulse of today’s world.
“Through immersive storytelling, Waheed asks a crucial question: What does it take to be a mother in times of disinformation and surveillance, where truth often blends with fiction?” said Karthika VK, publisher at Westland Books.
This will be Waheed’s first novel since Tell Her Everything (2019). His earlier works, The Collaborator (2012) and The Book of Gold Leaves (2014), earned critical acclaim for their poignant narratives and exploration of conflict and love.
Born in Srinagar, Kashmir, Mirza Waheed now lives in London. His writing often draws from his experiences growing up in the conflict-ridden valley, giving voice to themes of loss, identity, and human resilience.
Waheed has received numerous accolades, including the Guardian First Book Award nomination and the Shakti Bhatt Prize shortlist for The Collaborator.
In 2023, Waheed made headlines for boycotting the Israeli Film Festival in London, citing his solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
Known for his strong political stance and advocacy for human rights, Waheed’s works continue to reflect his commitment to addressing global and regional issues through literature.
