Parvaiz Yousuf, a resident of Pampore, has become the first Kashmiri to secure a fully funded PhD scholarship in Ecology and Evolution at Australia’s prestigious James Cook University, ranked among the top global institutions.
Hailing from Chatlam Larpora, Pampore, Parvaiz completed his integrated BSc-MSc in Zoology from the Central University of Kashmir in 2022.
He has been awarded the James Cook University Postgraduate Research Scholarship (JCUPRS), which covers his full tuition, provides a generous living stipend, and includes overseas health insurance. The scholarship is valued at approximately ₹1.66 crore.
Parvaiz’s interest in ornithology was sparked by his upbringing near the Chatlam Wetland Reserve, where migratory birds piqued his curiosity about avian life. His passion led him to author Birds of Jammu Kashmir Including Ladakh’ the first comprehensive documentation of the bird species found in the region.
Beyond academics, Parvaiz has served as the Director of the Wetland Research Centre for Wildlife Conservation Fund (WCF), focusing on the study of migratory birds in local wetlands. His commitment to wildlife conservation and research has also made him a strong advocate for ecotourism and environmental protection in Kashmir.
At James Cook University, Parvaiz will concentrate on the Southern black-throated finch, a bird species endangered by habitat loss. His PhD research will aim to develop conservation strategies to protect such species.
Parvaiz’s success showcases the immense potential of Kashmiri youth on the global academic stage, inspiring students across the region to pursue their passions with determination.
