A Kashmiri youth from Kupwara was assaulted in Shivjot, Kharar on Saturday evening while he was on his way to buy groceries.
The youth, who had come to Punjab to visit his brother studying at Chandigarh University, was attacked near a flyover when a group of men began to watch him suspiciously.
“It was evening time. A few men were watching my brother. They first threw a stone at his back, and then one of them hit him on the nose with a stick. They kept verbally abusing him, saying, ‘We will finish you all,'” his brother told The Kashmiriyat.
The assault lasted nearly ten minutes. According to the family, the Kashmiri youth managed to escape when someone approached the spot, drawing a crowd that distracted the attackers. Although the assailants tried to chase him, he was able to slip away unnoticed.
The injured youth has received several injuries, including one on his arms and nose each. He was treated the nearby hospital, where Punjab visited the siblings and assured them full support.
“My brother couldn’t identify if they were locals, but he claimed that none of them looked like locals,” his brother added.
Expressing his fear, the Kashmiri student studying at Chandigarh University said, “We have come here to study. Like everyone else, we too are against the killings in Pahalgam. But why are we being made to suffer like this? What have we done wrong?”
Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, the student appealed for help. “We feel insecure here. We had nothing to eat; that’s why my brother had gone out. It’s unsafe outside, and we barely move out of our house,” he said, requesting anonymity.
Following the recent killings in Pahalgam, attacks and threats against Kashmiris have been reported from several parts of India. In Uttarakhand, Hindutva right-wing groups have openly issued threats asking Kashmiri students to leave.
In contrast, the Omar Abdullah-led government in Jammu and Kashmir has deployed dedicated ministers to various Indian states to assist and ensure the safety of Kashmiri students.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Kashmiris living outside the valley have reportedly started returning to their homes out of fear.
The assaults come in the aftermath of the recent violence in Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of 26 persons including Locals.
