Kashmir’s religious body urges influential voices to act responsibly and avoid sectarian rights

The Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama Jammu & Kashmir, a representative body comprising both Sunni and Shia religious organisations, has issued a strong appeal for restraint and responsibility in public discourse following a controversial remark made by a prominent public figure regarding the Companions of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

In a statement, the Majlis emphasized that respect for the Prophet’s family (Ahl al-Bayt) and his Companions (Sahaba) is a core tenet of the Islamic faith. Any disparaging or disrespectful reference to these revered figures, it said, was deeply painful and unacceptable to the broader Muslim community.

The organisation expressed regret over what it called an “inappropriate and disrespectful statement” made recently by a well-known individual who holds “an influential position in society.”

Without naming the person, the Majlis said the remarks had “deeply hurt the sentiments of countless Muslims in the Valley” and urged the individual to clarify his statement to prevent further discord.

The Majlis reiterated its commitment to preserving sectarian unity and harmony in Kashmir. “Since its inception, the Majlis has worked tirelessly to promote brotherhood among all schools of thought. We believe this is a shared responsibility,” the statement read.

The organisation also called on scholars, preachers, and community leaders to exercise “utmost caution” in their sermons and public comments to avoid fueling sectarian tensions. “Internal discord among sects weakens us and strengthens those waiting to exploit such situations,” it warned.

In addition, the Majlis appealed to local media outlets and social media platforms to report such issues with discretion and responsibility, in order to prevent the further spread of controversial or divisive content.

“May Allah Almighty grant us the wisdom and goodwill to protect unity among the Muslims of the Valley and the wider Ummah,” the statement concluded.
