The Kashmir Trade Association (KTA) has urged authorities to prioritise the establishment of all-weather connectivity for the Valley, citing the recurring blockages on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway as a significant impediment to the local economy.
In a statement, President, KTA, Aijaz Shahdhar said that the Srinagar-Jammu highway, a vital lifeline for Kashmir’s economic activities, faces frequent disruptions due to adverse weather conditions, particularly during the winter months.
“These disruptions not only pose challenges for the smooth flow of goods and services but also have severe implications for the economic stability of the region,” Shahdar said.
KTA president emphasised that the current situation not only hampers daily transportation but also adversely affects businesses, agriculture, and tourism, which are pivotal sectors for Kashmir’s economic growth.
“The highway blockages lead to increased transportation costs, delays in delivery schedules, and a general slowdown in economic activities,” he added.
“The unreliable connectivity on the Srinagar-Jammu highway is a constant hurdle for the local businesses, causing financial losses and hindering the overall economic development of the region. We urge the concerned authorities to invest in and expedite the establishment of all-weather infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted connectivity throughout the year,” Shahdhar said.
The association acknowledges the efforts of the government in addressing the issue but emphasizes the need for sustainable, long-term solutions that can withstand the region’s challenging climatic conditions.
KTA calls for a comprehensive approach, combining technological advancements, infrastructure development, and effective disaster management strategies to mitigate the impact of weather-related disruptions.
“KTA remains committed to collaborating with the government and other stakeholders to find viable solutions that will enhance the resilience of Kashmir’s economy by ensuring reliable, all-weather connectivity,” the statement said.
