The residents of several villages of Chowgam area in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday staged a protest against the Jal Shakti (PHE) department Quazigund over the issue of non-availability of drinking water in the area.

Scores of the residents assembled on the Mian road raising slogans against Jal Shakti department for failing to provide drinking over in their area.

Protestors blocked the Qazigund- Kulgam road alleging that matter has been brought to the notice of the concerned authorities several times, but no improvement has been witnessed so far which forced the local residents to hit streets.

Residents speaking to The Kashmiriyat said, “We are demanding clean drinking water for our survival as the area is facing acute shortage of drinking water facilities from last several months.”

The protesters appealed to higher authorities to look into the matter and redress the problem at the earliest so that people feel some sort of relief.

Later Naib Tehsildar Chowgam Mohammad Amin Najar reached the spot and assured protesters to bring their grievance to higher authorities for redressal.

After his assurance protesters dispersed off peacefully.
