The iconic Clock Tower in Kulgam, constructed in 2009 as a proud landmark of the town, has become a subject of local dismay. Once a prominent feature of the area, it is now camouflaged behind a maze of electric wires and two large transformers, leading to a sarcastic nickname: the “Grid Station.”
Residents and shopkeepers near the tower have expressed frustration with its neglected state. The clock, once a symbol of time and tradition, has not worked for years. The tower itself is now overshadowed by the presence of the nearby transformers, which have made it a safety concern and an eyesore for locals. “The clock stopped working a long time ago, and now, instead of a landmark, it feels like a forgotten relic,” said a local shopkeeper.
The presence of these transformers has raised safety concerns, with residents noting that the area around the tower feels unsafe, and as a result, it has been avoided by passersby. “It creates fear among the local people because no one wants to go near it anymore,” one of the shopkeepers remarked.
In response to the growing complaints, Zahid Sajad, the Chief Executive Officer of the Municipal Council Kulgam, stated, “We are aware of the issue and have already raised it with the Executive Engineer of KPDCL Kulgam. We are working to find an alternative location for the transformers to ensure the Clock Tower is restored to its former glory.”
Despite these assurances, residents remain skeptical, with many wondering how long it will take for the situation to be addressed and the Clock Tower to reclaim its rightful place in the heart of Kulgam.
