Thousands of Ladakhis marched the streets on the call of the Kargil Democratic Alliance and Leh Apex Body, which has been demanding a complete restoration of statehood in the region.

Along with the restoration of statehood, Ladakhis have been demanding the implementation of the Sixth Schedule in the Ladakh region and demanding the preservation of jobs and land for the locals only.

KDA has vocally opposed the decision the abrogation of the special status of Jammu Kashmir on Aug 05, 2019.

The Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) had said that the region is gearing up for agitation in support of their demands for Statehood and Constitutional safeguards among others from June 1, however, the program was withdrawn later.

“The agitation calendar will be joint and unanimous,” they said, adding they proposed to start the agitational program with massive protests followed by bandh and some other forms of protest which will be discussed at the next week’s meeting.

It was on August 2, 2021 that the ideologically different representatives of Kargil and Leh districts joined hands to seek full-fledged Statehood along with Constitutional safeguards for the region.

On 24 July, 2020 a complete shutdown was observed in Ladakh when locals demanded a new law to bar Non-Locals from Government jobs in the region. The shutdown call was issued by the students union of the Ladakh region, and it was later supported by various socio-religious groups from both Muslim and Buddhists of the region.

A complete shutdown was also observed in Ladakh’s twin districts of Leh and Kargil on 13 December to protest against the August 05 decision and demand statehood for Ladakh division.
