The National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) has handed over five hydrogen fuel cell buses to SIDCO, an undertaking of the Ladakh administration, marking India’s first commercial deployment of hydrogen-powered buses. The buses were delivered on Wednesday and will begin operations in Leh, making it the highest-altitude green mobility project in the world.
The initiative is part of NTPC’s broader push toward clean transportation and renewable energy solutions. Hydrogen fuel cell buses emit only water vapor, making them a zero-emission alternative to conventional diesel buses and significantly contributing to reduced air pollution and climate impact.
In November 2023, NTPC had inaugurated the world’s first green hydrogen mobility station in Leh, located at an altitude of 11,562 feet. The station is powered by a 1.7 MW solar plant, ensuring that the hydrogen produced is completely renewable and eco-friendly.
The project is expected to cut carbon emissions by 350 metric tonnes annually and generate 230 metric tonnes of oxygen, equivalent to the environmental contribution of approximately 13,000 trees.
As India’s largest power producer, NTPC currently has over 81 GW of installed capacity and is aggressively expanding its renewable portfolio, with 9.6 GW of clean energy under development. It aims to reach 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032, reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable future.
This green hydrogen project in Ladakh positions India among the front-runners in adopting hydrogen as a clean fuel in high-altitude and challenging terrains.
