Light snowfall expected in parts of Kashmir this evening onwards: MeT

Light snowfall has been reported in some mountainous areas of Jammu and Kashmir as a feeble Western Disturbance (WD) affects the valley, Director MeT Srinagar Mukhtar Ahmad said on Wednesday

According to Ahmad, light snowfall has been observed in several mountain areas, while the weather remained generally clear in the plains.

However, he predicted light rain in lower areas of Jammu and snowfall in the higher reaches of Chenab Valley, Pir Panjal Range, and different parts of Kashmir, including south, central, and north Kashmir, between late night and February 1.

“In some mountain areas, especially in south Kashmir and Chenab Valley, there are also chances of light to moderate snowfall,” Ahmad stated.

Looking ahead, another Western Disturbance is expected to impact the region from the night of February 3 or early morning on February 4. Based on the current analysis, it is likely to be of moderate intensity.

“There are indications of moderate snowfall, especially in the Chenab Valley, higher reaches of Jammu, and mountains of south Kashmir, while central and north Kashmir may receive light snowfall,” he added.

During this period, the plains of Jammu may see light rainfall, while the overall weather will remain cloudy with occasional sunshine. “There is no continuous wet spell, but we expect intermittent light rain and snow in the coming days,” he noted.

Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to improve slightly, with minimum temperatures rising by 2-4 degrees across various stations. The maximum temperature is projected to remain around 14-15 degrees in some areas.

Ahmad assured that the weather department would provide more precise updates regarding the intensity and distribution of the upcoming WD in the coming days.–(KNS)
