Locals from Batengoo on Saturday held hostage two officials from the revenue department of Jammu Kashmir Government after the officials initiated a demolition drive in the Batengoo area of Khanabal in Anantnag district of South Kashmir.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat a local said that fight erupted between the officials and the locals when a team of the revenue department arrived in the area to demolish newly constructed structures, to which the locals objected.

The Locals staged a protest against the officials and disallowed the Department to conduct drives against the structures that have come up in the area.

An official confirming the development to The Kashmiriyat said that two officials of the Revenue Department were held hostage by the locals during the protests, however, they were released after hours.

“The Locals said they are being targetted selectively,” the official said.

He said that a team of Jammu Kashmir Police has reached the spot and is trying to pacify the protesters, who have gathered in large numbers.

The Kashmiriyat contacted Deputy Commissioner Anantnag who said he has not received any information on the development as of yet.
