CPI(M) leader and Kulgam MLA, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, has called on the Governments of India and the Jammu Kashmir to urgently address the plight of families affected by recent cross-border shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Boundary (IB).
Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, Tarigami urged authorities to take immediate steps to rehabilitate those impacted. “Residents of border areas like Uri, Poonch, Rajouri, and Kupwara have lived through fear, destruction, and loss,” he said. “It is the government’s responsibility to ensure their safe return, provide adequate compensation, and help rebuild their lives.”
Tarigami highlighted the widespread damage inflicted on homes, crops, and livestock due to the shelling. “In places like Rajouri and Poonch, entire homes have been reduced to rubble,” he noted. “These families deserve a roof over their heads. A thorough assessment of damages is urgently needed.”
He went on to stress the need for fair and timely compensation and called for government jobs to be offered to the next of kin of those who lost their lives. “The families need support to survive and rebuild. Providing employment to the bereaved is not charity—it’s justice,” Tarigami said.
Offering his condolences, he added, “We stand with every family that has suffered a loss. Our solidarity is with them, and we will continue to raise their voice.”
The CPI(M) leader also appealed to the central government to extend full support to the J&K administration in delivering relief. “This is a time to stand with the people in their hour of grief and need,” he emphasized.
“Learnt that access to The Kashmiriyat, another prominent news portal, has also been blocked. This further reinforces concerns about the shrinking space for independent journalism in Kashmir,” Tarigami said in a tweet.
