The army in the twin districts of Ramban and Rajouri have averted major fire tragedies, officials said here on Sunday.

Officials told that a fire erupted in the forest area near the Lam area of Nowshera in the Rajouri district during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

“Troops of Rashtriya Rifles battalion of Lam swung into action and two QRTs were pressed into service to douse the flames. After three hours they were able to control the flames,” they said.

They said that several hundred acres of dry grass field and agriculture land is located close to the forest area where the fire erupted and further spreading of flames would have resulted in a huge loss of wheat crop. “However, the timely action of the army prevented the fire from spreading further and a major tragedy was averted,” they said.
