All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), a coalition of separatist parties from the erstwhile state of Jammu Kashmir has appointed Masarat Alam as the new chairman.
The APHC made the announcement at a meeting in Srinagar and said that Shabbir Ahmad Shah and Ghulam Ahmad Gulzar will be the vice-chairmen of the Hurriyat Conference.
Maulvi Bashir Ahmad Irfani shall continue to work as the general secretary.
It’s pertinent to mention that the announcements came in the aftermath of veteran Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s passing away last Wednesday at his Hyderpora residence.
Meanwhile, the newly appointed chairman of the APHC, Masarat Alam Bhat (50) is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. A member of Jamaat e Islami, Masrat has been languishing in jail since 2015.
