Massive cloudburst hits Chashoti in Kishtwar, several casualties feared

A massive cloudburst struck the Chasoti area of Paddar in Jammu Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday, triggering panic among residents and pilgrims in the region.

Locals told The Kashmiriyat that the incident occurred amid the ongoing Machail Yatra, prompting an urgent rescue operation. “We have deployed nine ambulances for the rescue efforts, and more teams are on the way,” an official from the health department said.

Authorities fear casualties, though the exact number is yet to be confirmed. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and local volunteers have been mobilised to assist in the operation.

Heavy rains in the upper reaches have raised concerns over landslides and flash floods, which could hamper rescue work.

Local sources said several areas remain cut off, and efforts are being made to restore connectivity to ensure medical aid reaches those in need.

Rescue teams from Ababeel have also reached to the spot and have urged people in the vicinity to remain alert and avoid venturing into vulnerable areas until the situation stabilises. “It seems like a massive tragedy, we have deployed nine ambulances on the spot,” a volunteer of Ababeel told The Kashmiriyat.
