A massive fire broke out in multiple forest areas of Aishmuqam, including Wajroo, Budroo, Kathsoo, Sofipora, Kullar, and Grend, prompting an immediate response from the forest department.
According to Shama Ruhi, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Lidder Forest Division, who spoke to The Kashmiriyat, said that a significant portion of the fire—estimated to be around 80-90 per cent—has been brought under control. She credited the relentless efforts of forest employees and the cooperation of local residents for containing the blaze.
“Forest employees are on the ground, working tirelessly to prevent further spread. The support from the local community has been commendable, and we appreciate their assistance in controlling these fires,” Ruhi said while speaking to The Kashmiriyat.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined. However, officials are monitoring the situation closely to prevent any further flare-ups.
Forest fires have become increasingly common in Kashmir, with experts pointing to climate change, illegal encroachments, and unregulated human activity as key contributors.
According to official data, Kashmir has witnessed hundreds of forest fires in the past few years, leading to the destruction of vast stretches of green cover.
In 2023 alone, over 150 incidents of wildfires were reported in the region, many of them caused by prolonged dry spells.
