A large stock of unused medicines worth several lakhs of rupees was found dumped in a forest canal in Gundrehman area of Ganderbal district on Saturday, sparking outrage among residents and prompting an official probe.
According to locals, the discarded medicines were first noticed floating and scattered along the banks of the canal early in the morning. Alarmed by the discovery, they immediately alerted local authorities.
Responding swiftly, a team from the Drug Control Department Ganderbal visited the site and seized the dumped stock. Officials collected samples of the medicines and initiated an inquiry into their origin.
“We are investigating the matter thoroughly. The source of these medicines is being traced, and strict action will follow against whoever is responsible,” an official from the department told The Kashmiriyat.
Environmental experts and residents have raised concerns over the improper disposal, warning that the chemicals in the medicines can contaminate water sources and harm wildlife.
“This is not just a case of gross negligence and wastage but a potential ecological disaster,” said a local resident. “Our forests, water streams, and health are at risk. Those behind this must be punished.”
The Drug Control Department has assured the public that all leads are being pursued and accountability will be ensured.
Meanwhile, locals have demanded that CCTV surveillance and stricter checks be implemented at pharmacies and medical stores in the region to prevent such incidents in the future.
