Meet Shameem Ahmed, the Ambulance driver who transported pregnant woman to hospital amid heavy snowfall

Since the initiation of Covid 19, ambulance drivers have massively contributed to healthcare. From sleepless nights to restless days, the drivers who have seen it all have remained the unsung frontline heroes constantly battling the covid 19 pandemic globally.

Among hundreds of the underappreciated drivers is Shameem Ahmed Dar of South Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Shameem Ahmad Dar, an ambulance driver of the sub-district hospital, Zainapora, who works on a need basis has been massively appreciated by the locals, here, since he has been on the forefront to serve patients.

“Shameem has served for more than twenty years as an ambulance driver in sub-district hospitals. He is among the most sincere, hardworking, and dedicated people who have not only served the department in the toughest times but also saved many human lives during emergencies.

Be it the Covid-19 pandemic or the snowfall in the district, Shameem has always been on the forefront,” locals told The Kashmiriyat.

In one of the many tales of courage sung locally, one is the story from Shopian’s Zainapora, when he saved a pregnant lady by transporting her to the hospital amid heavy snowfall.

He took the lady to the hospital despite the roads being covered by 3 feet of snow, the locals said. He is known for the risks he takes in saving the lives of the serious patients of the area, they told The Kashmiriyat.

“I got a call around 1 30 in the night. The man on the phone told me that his wife was pregnant and there was no way for him to take out his car and reach the hospital as it was covered under snow,” Shameem said. He said that the cries of the woman that he could hear over the phone rushed him out of his bed.

“As I went out, I saw the tyres of the ambulance were under snow, I took a showel and asked my family members to help me remove the snow from the tyres. Within 10 minutes, I was ready. I left towards the house of the woman and after travelling for more than 40 minutes, I reached her house, Shameem told The Kashmiriyat. He said that on the way the ambulance was stuck several times, but he did not loose hope. “I infact, took the showel along and removed the snow from the road, wherever it was necessary,” he said.

“He is the real hero of our heath care system of our area. I humbly request the L.G. Administration as well as the district administration to take his efforts into count and reward him accordingly,” a local said.
