Militants invade Udhampur home, dine and disappear before government forces arrive

In a chilling incident amidst an ongoing search operation in Jammu’s Ramnagar, three suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed militants reportedly entered the house of a local resident in Basantgarh on Wednesday night and stayed for nearly three and a half hours.

The house owner, Rashpal, speaking to Republic, recounted the terrifying episode: “They came to our house around 8 PM and left by 11:30 PM. There were four of us at home. The militants—three young men dressed in black—were armed. One carried a basic weapon while another had a sophisticated firearm with a scope, possibly an M4.”

Rashpal said the men spoke in Urdu and understood Dogri fluently. They reportedly made an audio call on WhatsApp using his phone, speaking in a language he couldn’t identify. Afterward, they took the phone but returned the SIM card.

“They ate some food, packed the rest, and asked us about alternate routes. They took my trousers, bag, and umbrella, and told us not to inform anyone. At first, I thought they were soldiers, but they made it clear they were militants,” Rashpal added.

The house is located 15–20 kilometers on foot from the site of the recent encounter in Ramnagar. It remains unclear if the men were from the same group involved in that encounter.

Security forces have since launched an intensified search operation in and around Basantgarh.
