The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has asked for an elaborate report from the Jammu Kashmir police on the burial of the late Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, The Hindu reported.
Geelani passed away on September 1, at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness at his Hyderpora, Srinagar residence. In order to prevent people from gathering, curfew like restrictions were imposed in the valley and Geelani was buried in the middle of the night.
According to the report by The Hindu, a senior police official confirmed that a report was under preparation on the “sequence of events” between 10:30 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. during the intervening night of September 1 and 2.
Geelani’s final rites took place under massive security. He was buried at a graveyard near his house, although he had willed to be buried at the Mazar-e-Shohada (Martyrs’ Grave) at Srinagar. The family alleged that the forces’ personnel snatched Geelani’s body and did not let the family perform the final rites.

The report claims that a Geneva-based rights organization had raised the issue of the late Hurriyat leader’s burial with the Government of India.
