Death toll reaches at least 189 in India’s northeastern state of Assam and neighboring Nepal due to heavy flooding from monsoon rains, government officials said on Sunday.
Nearly four million people have been displaced in India’s Assam and neighboring Nepal regions, Reuters reported.
The floods emerged from the overflowing Brahmaputra River, which flows through China’s Tibet, India, and Bangladesh.
India
Since late May, Assam has recorded over 2.75 million people displaced by three waves of floods.
These floods resulted in 79 fatalities after two more deaths were reported overnight, a state government official said.
Keshab Mahanta, Assam water resources Minister, told Reuters, “The flood situation remains critical with most of the rivers flowing menacingly above the danger mark.”
Out of 33 districts, 25 districts of Assam remain affected after the current wave of flooding.
Nepal
In Nepal, floods and landslides have led to the death of over 100 people since June, officials said.
Nepal’s police officials state approximately 110 people killed, another 100 injured and a hundred displaced due to floods and landslides in 26 of the country’s 77 districts.
Murari Wasti, Nepal’s Home ministry official, said the number of deaths was expected to rise as 48 people were still missing.
Barun Paudel of the weather forecasting office Kathmandu reported that heavy rains are still expected in Nepal for the next four days.
“We have urged residents to remain alert against possible landslides and floods,” he said
