The announcement for elections comes at a time when Jammu Kashmir has been without an elected assembly for over five years since it was suspended by Governor in June 2018.
Local politicians from Jammu Kashmir have been demanding early assembly elections in the region, however, the centre maintains that elections will be held only when the atmosphere is “conducive” to conduct elections in the region.
