A 21-year-old Muslim man, Ijaz Momin, succumbed to gunshot injuries on Saturday evening after police opened fire on protesters at Sajur More in Suti, Murshidabad, a day earlier. He had been critically wounded during demonstrations against the Waqf (Amendment) Act and was receiving treatment at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital.
Three other individuals—Golam Muddin Sheikh, Hasan Sheikh, and one yet to be identified—were also injured and admitted to Jangipur Hospital. The ongoing unrest, which began Friday, has left over a dozen protesters and 15 police personnel injured. Authorities have arrested at least 118 people in connection with the violence.
The protests erupted following the recent passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Parliament. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appealed for calm, assuring citizens that the law would not be implemented in West Bengal. In response to the escalating violence, the Calcutta High Court has directed central forces to remain stationed in Murshidabad until Thursday.
In a separate incident in Samaherganj on Saturday, a father and son—Hargobindo Das, 72, and Chandan Das, 40—were killed after a mob stormed their home. While police are probing possible links to the ongoing protests, local residents claim the murders were unrelated. A relative, Prosenjit Das, told The Indian Express that he witnessed a mob looting their house and attacking the duo while he hid nearby. The motive behind the killings remains unclear.
State Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, said police exercised restraint, attributing the violence to “rumor-mongering” and “hooliganism.” He added that the situation is now under control.
Prohibitory orders have been imposed and internet services suspended in several areas of Murshidabad. Mobs have attacked the residences of TMC MLA Manirul Islam and MP Khalilur Rehman. Protesters also blocked railway tracks, leading to widespread disruption of train services in the region. — With inputs from agencies.
