‘Muslims Not Allowed in the Temple During Festival’- Board in Kerala Evokes Controversy

A board was hung on a tree in a temple of Kerala announcing that “Muslims are not allowed in the temple premises during the festival”. The board was found on the premises of the Sree Malliyottu Palottu Kavu temple of Kunhimangalam in Kannur District of Kerala.

The board has sparked a controversy on social media platforms and faced a criticism by the people for mentioning a particular religion.

The board has elicited various reactions on social media, with some alleging that the Sangh Parivar agenda is being implemented in the temple.

It is said “the place is known for its secularism as following a ritual of meeting Muslim leaders for blessings”. The ritual is called as “Madayi”.

Many people have slammed the CPI(M) for its double standards on secularism in the state.

Some of the people said that it is the way of spreading hatred against one community and nurturing Islamophobia.

Meanwhile, it is also said that there were issues between the Muslims of Madayi and the people of Kunhimangalam inside the premises of the temple during the festival from decades. Over the years, clashes became a routine during temple festivals, then the temple authorities and elders from the Muslim community and the masjid in Madayi decided to restrict the entry of Muslims during the festival season.

Film and theatre actor Santhosh Keezhattoor told The News Minute that anybody can enter the temple, adding he don’t understand the mentality of the people who has placed the board.

However, the representatives of the temple committee has refused to react saying that it’s been a long-time practice
