National Conference (NC) Working Committee held a meeting in Srinagar on Wednesday to review the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the aftermath of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and the escalation along the Line of Control.
The meeting, chaired by NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah, took place at the party headquarters, Nawa-i-Subh. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also the party’s vice president, was present at the session. The proceedings began with a two-minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the April 22 attack at Baisaran, Pahalgam.
“JKNC Working Committee meeting was held at party headquarters in Nawa-i-Subh, Srinagar, under the chairmanship of president Dr Farooq Abdullah. Honourable CM Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) was also present,” Tanvir Sadiq, the party’s spokesperson said.
During the meeting, the committee passed seven resolutions unanimously. The second resolution drew particular attention as it reaffirmed the party’s firm commitment to the restoration of Jammu Kashmir’s constitutional safeguards under Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution.
The NC stated that this demand continues to reflect the core aspirations of the people of the region.
Jammu Kashmir’s special status was revoked unilaterally by the Government of India on August 5, 2019, following the abrogation of Article 370. The move stripped the region of its autonomy and led to its bifurcation into two Union Territories — Jammu Kashmir, and Ladakh. The National Conference has consistently opposed this decision and has pledged to continue its peaceful and constitutional struggle to reverse it.
Another key resolution urged the central government to restore full statehood to Jammu Kashmir without further delay, recalling assurances made in Parliament and observations from the Supreme Court regarding the region’s political rights, the spokesperson said.
“The committee also condemned the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people, and the recent cross-border shelling that claimed the lives of 23 civilians. It expressed solidarity with the affected families and called for accountability,” Tanvir told the press.
Welcoming the recent ceasefire announcement, the NC appealed to both India and Pakistan to uphold peace along the border and engage in long-term dialogue to resolve ongoing tensions.
The party reiterated its commitment to its political manifesto and democratic methods, and voiced concerns over the harassment of youth, arbitrary arrests, and the suppression of media.
The Party also condemned the mistreatment of J-K residents, students, and traders in other parts of the country and urged state governments across India to ensure their safety and dignity.
