With the world’s eyes fixed on elections in Jammu Kashmir, a huge number of voters has turned to polling booths across Kashmir and Jammu divisions on Wednesday to excercise their franchise.
The assembly polls happening after a hiatus of ten years in the region have recorded a brisk voter turnout during the first phase held on September 18.
The first phase of the three phased elections was conducted in 24 assembly segments spread to the Chenab and Kashmir valleys.
As per officials who spoke to The Kashmiriyat the two assembly segments in Shopian have recorded a voter turnout of 58.85 per cent.
“Anantnag had a voter turnout of 54.17%. Doda’s turnout was approximately 69.33%. Kishtwar had a turnout of 77.23%, while Kulgam showed an approximate trend of 61.57%. Pulwama had a turnout of 46.03%. Ramban’s turnout was approximately 67.71%. Shopian had a turnout of 53.64%.” the official said.
This election holds particular significance as it is being conducted after a gap of 10 years, following a period of political uncertainty and the revocation of Article 370 in 2019.
Many see this election as a pivotal moment for the restoration of democratic processes in Jammu Kashmir, offering a platform for addressing local issues related to governance, development, and security concerns.
Despite challenges, there is a visible eagerness among some segments of the population to participate in shaping their political future.
