No census in India till 2027: MHA

The Ministry of Home Affairs, led by Union Minister Amit Shah, has issued the official notification for the conduct of the National Population Census 2027.

The notification, issued under Section 3 of the Census Act, 1948, states:

“A census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027. The reference date for the said census shall be 00:00 hours of March 1, 2027, except for the Union Territory of Ladakh and snow-bound, non-synchronous areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.”

In these regions, due to harsh climatic conditions, the census will begin earlier, with the reference date set at 00:00 hours on October 1, 2026.

According to officials, the census will be conducted in two phases, beginning in hilly areas of the north. Notably, the government has also confirmed that a caste census will be carried out alongside the population enumeration.

The Centre had announced its intention to proceed with the census earlier this month, marking the formal beginning of preparations for one of the largest administrative exercises in the country.
